The Super Sonic Let's Play is a Franchise Play created by The D-Pad in 2016, focusing on the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. A sequel to Sonic Week, the first LP series created by the channel, it aims to cover every single Sonic game across the entire history of the franchise. The project was announced at the end of an LP of the fan game Sonic Dreams Collection as part of The D-Pad's fifth anniversary celebrations on April 4, 2016. It debuted officially on June 21, 2016, during the fifth anniversary of Sonic Week.
The schedule for The Super Sonic Let's Play consists of uploads every weekday, generally between 15 and 20 minutes in length, with games being covered roughly chronologically in order of release. However, notable new releases are often played as soon as they are available. Additional episodes covering other media in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise are sometimes released on weekends. Each LP begins with a live-action segment exploring the history and development of the game being played, but there are no outro segments, similarly to The Dreamy Let's Play. Live-action intros occasionally relate to The D-Pad's ongoing metaplot.
As of March 29, 2024, 84 games (77 official Sonic games, 6 fan games, and 1 game related to the franchise but not part of it) have been played as part of the project, and a total of 1412 episodes have been released.
Structure
The Super Sonic Let's Play is split into several large parts, known as "Acts", each centered on a different phase in the history of the franchise.
- Act 1: Genesis, after its announcement on April 4, 2016, began officially on June 21, 2016, and concluded on December 23, 2016 after a total of 154 episodes. It covered the "golden age" of Sonic the Hedgehog on the Sega Genesis from 1991 to 1994, mainly the original trilogy of Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and the bifurcated Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles.
- Act 2: Chaos ran from January 9, 2017 to May 19, 2017, with a total of 85 episodes. It is by far the shortest part of any Franchise Play on the channel. It covered the Sega Saturn era of Sonic the Hedgehog, a strange period between the classic and Adventure series with many poorly-received spinoffs. The only main series game to see a release during this time was Sonic 3D Blast.
- Act 3: A New Adventure ran from May 23, 2017 to April 1, 2020, with a total of 525 episodes. It focused on the Adventure era of the franchise, in which Sega transitioned from a first-party to third-party developer, and Sonic games began appearing on Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft's consoles. The major games of this part are Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, and Sonic Heroes. Due to the games becoming significantly longer, the episode count of this part is over twice that of Acts 1 and 2 combined.
- Act 4: The Games of Disaster ran from April 4, 2020 to February 17, 2023, with a total of 435 episodes. It covers the Sonic franchise in the seventh generation of video game consoles, during which a number of critically panned major titles were released, such as Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) and Sonic and the Secret Rings.
- Act 5: Crossover Chronicles began on February 22, 2023. This part is currently ongoing.
