In a live-action intro, Rick and John introduce the plot of Zero 4, as well as the few mechanics that were changed or added since the previous game. In the game itself, the group watch the opening cutscene, and Rick begins to play through the intro stage after reconfiguring his controls. He progresses through the stage, trying at the new Zero Knuckle weapon along the way, and soon reaches the end. There, Zero saves a group of humans from attack, and talks to them for a while. Back at the now mobile base, Zero talks to Ciel about the mission; when Rick is given control again, he explores the area and goes to see Cerveau, although he misses an important piece of dialogue about how to throw away weapons obtained with the Knuckle.

Rick enters the next stage after a brief cutscene at the base, and progresses through it fairly easily. At the end of the stage, he quickly defeats a boss, then ends up in a cutscene where all eight of the game's bosses appear and prepare to attack Zero. They are interrupted by Commander Craft, who informs Zero of Weil's "Ragnarok" plan to destroy the world outside of Neo Arcadia. All of the bosses leave, ending the level. Rick returns to the base and talks to a few characters, before returning to Ciel to go to the next level.

After watching a few more cutscenes, Rick is finally given the choice of which level to pick. The group laugh at the ridiculously-named Pegasolta Eclair, and Rick decides to attempt that stage first. He makes his way through the first part of the level, and reaches a fight against a dragon miniboss, which causes him to lose a life. He defeats it on his next try, but loses more lives in the next area of the stage, leaving him with only one attempt at the boss itself. He is quickly killed and made to restart the stage from the beginning. While playing through it again, Lindsay trips over a cable, causing the RetroN to lose power.

Back at the menu, Rick decides to try a different level, going to Fenri Lunaedge's stage. He has some trouble here, dying once to the enemies and coming close to dying a second time later in the stage. He is also unable to figure out how to open a locked door, having heard that there is a key card somewhere in the level but reaching the boss without seeing one. Fenri Lunaedge himself turns out to just as difficult as Pegasolta Eclair; Rick loses his two remaining lives, receiving a game over.
