Sonic the Hedgehog is a 1991 platform game developed by Ancient and published by Sega for the Master System and Game Gear. It is an 8-bit companion game to the 16-bit Sega Genesis title Sonic the Hedgehog, the first game in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. It features the same plot and basic gameplay as the Genesis game, but with a different set of levels, a completely different method of obtaining Chaos Emeralds, and an emphasis on exploration over fast-paced platforming. The Master System version of the game was played on The D-Pad in 2016, as the third game in The Super Sonic Let's Play. The LP consisted of 6 episodes, released on weekdays from June 29 to July 4, 2016.

The game was revisited on The D-Pad in a one-off episode by Rick in 2022, as the first game in Sonic Weekathon II. The episode was streamed live on the dpadfm Twitch account before being uploaded to YouTube on June 23, 2022.
