Sonic & Knuckles is a 1994 platform game developed by Sega Technical Institute and published by Sega for the Sega Genesis. It is the second half of the third main game in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, after the original game was split in two halfway through development. As such, its plot continues directly from the end of that game, with Sonic chasing Dr. Robotnik through Angel Island while also battling Knuckles. Changes from Sonic the Hedgehog 3 include the removal of Tails as a playable character, and the addition of Knuckles instead. Playing as Knuckles takes the player through alternate routes in many of the stages, and features a new plot set after the events of Sonic's story.
The Sonic & Knuckles cartridge features special "lock-on technology" that allows for any other Genesis cartridge to be connected to it with unique results. Connecting the game's first half, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, combines the two into their originally intended form as Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles. Connecting Sonic the Hedgehog 2 creates Knuckles the Echidna in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, allowing the player to control Knuckles in that earlier game. Connecting the original Sonic the Hedgehog creates Blue Sphere, consisting of millions of new "get blue spheres" bonus stages akin to those in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic & Knuckles. Finally, connecting any other Genesis game allows for a single stage from Blue Sphere to be played.
Sonic & Knuckles was played on The D-Pad in 2016, as the seventeenth game in The Super Sonic Let's Play. The LP consisted of 6 episodes, released on weekdays from November 8 to November 14, 2016.
