The schedule for ''The Legendary Let's Play'' initially consisted of daily uploads; on weekdays, episodes between 15 and 20 minutes in length covering the 8-bit and handheld games; on weekends, episodes between 45 and 60 minutes in length covering the longer console entries. The Legendary Let's Play is a Franchise Play created by The D-Pad in 2013, focusing on Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda franchise. It aims to cover every single Zelda game across the entire history of the franchise, making it the first conventional Franchise Play on the channel. The project was announced with a trailer on August 22, 2013, ending a six-month hiatus during which no videos were uploaded to the channel, and debuted officially five days later with the first episode of The Legend of Zelda.

The schedule for The Legendary Let's Play initially consisted of daily uploads; on weekdays, episodes between 15 and 20 minutes in length covering the 8-bit and handheld games; on weekends, episodes between 45 and 60 minutes in length covering the longer console entries. In 2017, with the beginning of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, the schedule shifted to exclusively weekday episodes for games, with additional episodes covering other media in the Zelda franchise sometimes released on weekends. Rather than being played in order of release, games were initially organized into groups based on their place in the timeline, ensuring that any set of games featuring the same Link would be played in chronological order. From the second part of the series onward, this system was dropped in favor of the roughly chronological release order used by later Franchise Plays on the channel. LPs have occasionally featured live-action segments related to The D-Pad's ongoing metaplot.

As of August 29, 2024, 50 games (42 official Zelda games, 2 compilations containing Zelda-themed games, 2 games related to the franchise but not part of it, and 4 fan games) have been played as part of the project, and a total of 1710 episodes have been released.

Structure

The Legendary Let's Play is split into several large parts, each one defined by a different approach to covering the games in the franchise.

  • The first part, simply known as The Legendary Let's Play, was announced on August 22, 2013, began officially on August 27, 2013, and concluded on January 4, 2015 after a total of 554 episodes. It covered every main series The Legend of Zelda title released up to that point, largely ignoring spinoffs and side games, with the notable exceptions of Nintendo Land and Hyrule Warriors. Three games were played simultaneously for the majority of this part; 8-bit and handheld games in the weekday slot, "Child Timeline" games in the Sunday slot, and the other major console games in the Saturday slot. Hyrule Warriors, then newly-released, occupied a second weekday slot for the duration of its LP, resulting in the only period in the history of the channel that four games in a single franchise were played at once.
  • The second part, The Legendary Let's Play: Dawn of a New Day (originally titled The Legendary Let's Play 3D until it was renamed in 2017), ran from January 5, 2015 to August 16, 2018, with a total of 317 episodes. Released on a more infrequent schedule than the first part, it consisted almost entirely of LPs of newly-released Zelda games, with the series entering hiatuses between the completion of one game and the release of the next one. Games played during this part include The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D, The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition.
  • The third part, The Legendary Let's Play: A Terrible Fate, was announced at the end of Dawn of a New Day, began on August 24, 2018, and concluded on March 28, 2023, after 547 episodes. Returning the series to a regular weekday schedule, it covered every spinoff in the franchise that was skipped during the first part, bringing The Legendary Let's Play to the same level of thoroughness as later Franchise Plays like The Mega Let's Play. In addition, new games such as Cadence of Hyrule, The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening and Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity continued to be covered upon their release. The Legendary Let's Play was considered fully complete with the final episode of The Legend of Zelda: Second Quest on October 22, 2021, with only two further episodes released over the next 18 months.
  • The fourth part, The Legendary Let's Play Reawakens, began on April 24, 2023. It revived the series after an 18-month hiatus, and initially focused on Rick's livestreamed attempts to 100% Breath of the Wild in preparation for its sequel, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, before covering the latter game in full upon its release.
