The Mega Let's Play is a Franchise Play created by The D-Pad in 2014, focusing on the Mega Man franchise. It aims to cover every single Mega Man game across the entire history of the franchise, along with a large number of games tangentially related to the franchise. The project was announced with a trailer posted on December 17, 2014, shortly before the conclusion of the first part of The Legendary Let's Play. It debuted officially on January 19, 2015, replacing the former series as the main focus of the channel.
The schedule for The Mega Let's Play consists of daily uploads; 15-minute videos covering the games from the "main timeline" of the classic, X, Zero, ZX, and Legends series on weekdays, and 30-minute videos covering games from the alternate timeline of the Battle Network and Star Force series on weekends. It is the first Franchise Play on the channel to include regular live-action segments, with each game featuring both an intro and outro exploring the history, development, and reception of the game in question. These live-action segments are also notable for being the origin of the metaplot, a serialized narrative that has continued across multiple projects on the channel, but is still most closely associated with The Mega Let's Play.
As of October 27, 2024, 97 games (73 official Mega Man games, 6 unofficial games, and 18 games related to the franchise but not part of it) have been played as part of the project, and a total of 1996 episodes have been released. Additionally, The Mega Let's Play – Fan Games, a separate series covering a variety of Mega Man fan games, released 6 episodes in 2017.
Structure
The Mega Let's Play is split into seven large parts, each centered on a different phase in the history of the franchise. The parts are named and structured corresponding to the games in the weekday slot; the weekend slot games are not taken into account, and parts often end with a weekend game partially complete.
- Part 1: The Silver Age, after its announcement on December 17, 2014, began on January 19, 2015, and concluded on June 27, 2015. It covered the original NES era of Mega Man, primarily featuring the first five games in the classic series. The weekend videos for this part covered the first Mega Man Battle Network game and part of the second.
- Part 2: The Next Generation, ran from June 27, 2015 to January 1, 2016. It charted the transition of the franchise to the SNES, covering the sixth and seventh games in the classic series, and the first two games in the Mega Man X series. The weekend videos covered the remainder of the second Battle Network game and the beginning of the third.
- Part 3: Halcyon Days, ran from January 3, 2016 to June 17, 2016. This part focused on the shift from the fourth to fifth console generation, as well as Capcom's move from Nintendo to Sony as their primary platform for releasing Mega Man games. Major games covered were the eighth and "eight-and-a-halfth" classic series games, the third and fourth Mega Man X games, and the first game in the Mega Man Legends series. The weekend videos for this part solely consisted of the third Battle Network game.
- Part 4: The Misadventures, ran from June 22, 2016 to March 9, 2017. It began with the non-Mega Man release Mighty No. 9, created by former Mega Man producer Keiji Inafune and intended as a spiritual successor to the franchise. The rest of the series covered the second Legends game, and the fifth and sixth Mega Man X games, the latter of which is notable for being a crucial turning point in the relationship between Capcom and Inafune. The weekend videos covered the third and fourth Battle Network games.
- Part 5: The Zero Hour, ran from March 19, 2017 to January 1, 2018. Its primary focus was the Mega Man Zero series, with all four of its games featured in this part, but also covered the final two games in the X series. The weekend videos concluded the fourth Battle Network game.
- Part 6: The End, began on January 2, 2018, and concluded on February 20, 2020. This part covered Capcom's final attempts at revitalizing the franchise: the two remakes on the PSP, the two Mega Man ZX games on the DS, and the retro-styled ninth and tenth classic series games, after which the franchise entered a long wilderness period. The new release Mega Man 11, which ended this hiatus, was played immediately upon its release and served as the conclusion to the main weekday portion of The Mega Let's Play. Robot Rumble, a tournament of all the classic series Robot Masters intended as a celebration of this feat, began on December 24, 2018, and is still ongoing, with episodes released on a very infrequent schedule. The weekend videos for this part covered the final two Battle Network games, and continued for well over a year after the weekday videos had ended.
- Postgame Pregame, the seventh part, was announced at the end of Part 6. The weekend videos began on February 23, 2020, and the weekday videos, returning after nearly 18 months, began slightly later on April 5, 2020. It concluded on February 20, 2022. This part covered a wide variety of games released between 1990 and 2010, the same timeframe as the first six parts, including several spinoffs that were not covered in chronological order at the time, games that are not part of the Mega Man franchise but feature playable characters from it, and games that were inspired by Mega Man and worked on by studios connected to the franchise in some way. The weekend videos continued as normal, covering the first two in the Mega Man Star Force series.
- Postgame, the eighth and final part, began on April 2, 2022. It covers games released during the Mega Man hiatus from 2010 to 2018, continuing Postgame Pregame's focus on fangames and other tangentially-related games to the franchise. The weekend videos continue to cover the Mega Man Star Force trilogy. This part is currently ongoing.
