It is played using the 2010 Nintendo DS games Pokémon HeartGold Version and Pokémon SoulSilver Version, remakes of the 2000 Game Boy Color games Pokémon Gold Version and Pokémon Silver Version, and part of the fourth generation of the franchise. As the winner of the previous Padlocke, Brilliant Diamond vs. Shining Pearl, Rick began with HeartGold on November 18, 2024, and will be followed by John with SoulSilver once Rick has completed the first leg. As of December 26, 2024, 3 episodes of the series have been released; 3 of HeartGold, 0 of SoulSilver, and 0 faceoffs.
Faceoff record
The following is a list of the results of Rick and John's faceoffs throughout the series. The scores listed for each player refer to the number of Pokémon that have not fainted by the end of the battle. Due to Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl's competitive battle mechanics, all levels were capped at 50 for the later faceoffs. Rick became the overall winner after defeating John in the seventh faceoff. Ultimately, Rick won 7 battles, and John won 2.
