Pokémon Rivals: FireRed vs. LeafGreen is the debut installment of Pokémon Rivals. Due to its lacking of a number of key features present in later Padlockes, it is known as the "zeroth" installment of the series. It was played using the 2004 Game Boy Advance games Pokémon FireRed Version and Pokémon LeafGreen Version, remakes of the 1998 Game Boy games Pokémon Red Version and Pokémon Blue Version, and part of the third generation of the franchise. Rick began with FireRed on April 16, 2012, and played continuously until his completion of the sixth gym on February 24, 2013, after which the series entered a long hiatus. The series returned on December 2, 2014 with the delayed start of John's LP of LeafGreen, and eventually the return of FireRed. FireRed and LeafGreen concluded on March 8 and May 22, 2015, respectively. The series returned on April 16, 2022, with a one-off episode covering the postgame of FireRed in celebration of the tenth anniversary of Pokémon Rivals. Overall, the series consisted of 201 episodes; 106 of FireRed and 95 of LeafGreen.

Information

Due to the fact that the games were being emulated, along with its unconventional schedule compared to later installments, FireRed vs. LeafGreen lacked the faceoffs that came to define the Padlocke format beginning with X vs. Y. Because of this, no official winner was decided. It has been argued that John could be deemed the winner due to losing less Pokémon to the Elite Four, but a win is not officially counted in the Pokémon Rivals record. Rick covered the postgame of his game, a task traditionally carried out by the winner of a Padlocke.
