Sonic the Hedgehog is a 1991 platform game developed by Sonic Team and published by SEGA. It is the first game in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, and the first game ever played by The D-Pad. It has been played a total of three times on the channel - the first of these playthroughs was in 2011, as the first game of Sonic Week, with the group playing the original Genesis version. It was revisited in 2014 for D-Pad Rivals as a race between Rick and C/J, with C/J playing the Xbox 360 version, and Rick playing the Wii version. The third and final playthrough of the game was in 2016, with the Genesis version being played once again, as the first proper game in The Super Sonic Let's Play.

Points of discussion include the Sonic franchise in general, classic video game music, and the annoyance of deleting system files.

C/J obtains the fifth Chaos Emerald before finishing Spring Yard Zone and beginning Labyrinth Zone. However, the increased difficulty of the level prevents him from getting enough rings to enter a special stage; the episode ends with him losing his rings right before the end of Act 2.

C/J dies for the first time in the LP to the boss of Labyrinth Zone, but succeeds on the second try. He then goes on to clear the entirety of Star Light Zone, finally getting the last Chaos Emerald on the way.

C/J makes quick work of Scrap Brain Zone Act 3 and heads to the Final Zone. The group discuss The Adventures of Duane and Brando's "Sonic", a dangerous potential bug in the final boss fight, and the game's anticlimactic 'good ending' as C/J defeats Robotnik and completes the first game of Sonic Week.
