This page is about the Sega Genesis title. For the version on the Master System and Game Gear, see Sonic the Hedgehog (8-bit). For the 2006 game of the same name, see Sonic the Hedgehog (2006).

Sonic the Hedgehog is a 1991 platform game developed by Sonic Team and published by Sega for the Sega Genesis. It is the first game in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. The original Genesis version of the game was played by The D-Pad during the week of its 20th anniversary in 2011, as the first game in Sonic Week. It was the first game ever played on the channel. The LP was recorded in a single session, and released on The D-Pad's then-website, dpadup.com, as one long episode on June 20, 2011. Later, this video was edited into 6 shorter episodes, and uploaded to The D-Pad's YouTube channel between August 15 and August 22, 2011.

In 2014, on the game's 23rd anniversary, it was revisited on the channel as the first game in D-Pad Rivals. The game was played as a race between Rick and C/J. The race was released in 6 episodes from June 23 to June 28, 2014, with an extended bonus episode covering the race in its entirety released on June 30, 2014.

In 2016, during the week of the game's 25th anniversary, it was played a third time on the channel, as the second game (after the fan game Sonic Dreams Collection) in The Super Sonic Let's Play, The D-Pad's comprehensive project covering the Sonic franchise in its entirety. This time, the original Genesis version was played once again. The LP was preceded by an installment of A Brief History covering Sega as a company, and consisted of 5 episodes. It began officially on June 20, 2016, and concluded on June 24, 2016.
