Players can control eight different characters from across the franchise through 20 different racetracks, in both one-player and two-player modes. The game was played on The D-Pad in 2012, in a short-lived feature on the channel called Putting Our Guests to the Test, wherein various guests on the podcast would record their times on the Mario Circuit 2 track, in an homage to the "Star in a Reasonably Priced Car" segment from the TV series Top Gear. The series consisted of 3 episodes, released from April 18 to April 29, 2012.

Super Mario Kart is one of the twenty-one games included in the Super NES Classic Edition dedicated console. This version of the game was played on The D-Pad in a one-off episode in 2017, as the eighth game in their Super NES Classic Edition series. The episode was released on October 12, 2017.
