John names the main character "Johngl" and starts the game off with the opening cutscenes. Lindsay arrives just in time to see the beginning of the game, where John obtains the Rusty Sword and faces a number of basic enemies. Upon returning to the village, he explores it briefly before meeting with the Elder and finding out he has pulled out the legendary Mana Sword, which the townspeople blame for the monster attacks. He then falls into an underground cave, starting the first boss fight. John barely manages to defeat the boss, before viewing a series of cutscenes in which his character is exiled from the village. Having been told to head to the Water Palace, John travels there, although he almost dies to a hostile flower enemy along the way. Upon reaching the temple and meeting Luka, he obtains the power of the Mana Seed, as well as a new spear weapon.
