The Dreamy Let's Play is a Franchise Play created by The D-Pad in 2016, focusing on Nintendo's Kirby franchise. It aims to cover every single Kirby game across the entire history of the franchise, as well as every game in the tangentially-connected Super Smash Bros. franchise. The project was announced on March 22, 2016 as a replacement for The Fright Before Christmas, and debuted officially three days later on March 25.
The schedule for The Dreamy Let's Play consists of uploads every weekday, generally between 15 and 20 minutes in length, with games being covered roughly chronologically in order of release. However, notable new releases after often played as soon as they are available. Other media from the Kirby franchise has occasionally been covered in additional episodes. Similarly to The Mega Let's Play, each LP begins with a live-action segment exploring the history and development of the game being played, but there are no outro segments. Live-action intros occasionally relate to The D-Pad's ongoing metaplot.
As of March 8, 2023, 45 games (38 official Kirby games, 6 official Super Smash Bros. games, and 1 fan game) have been played as part of the project, and a total of 989 episodes have been released. Additionally, 43 episodes of Nightmare in the Dreamy Let's Play have been released.
Structure
The Dreamy Let's Play is split into three large parts, each one covering a different era in the history of the franchise.
- The first part, simply known as The Dreamy Let's Play, was announced on March 22, 2016, began officially on March 25, 2016, and concluded on March 3, 2017 after a total of 228 episodes. It covered the classic era of Kirby, featuring games released from 1992 to 2001, from Kirby's Dream Land on the Game Boy to Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble on the GameCube, along with the original Super Smash Bros. and the new release Kirby: Planet Robobot. Following the completion of this part, The Dreamy Let's Play was placed on hiatus to free up space on the schedule for the return of The Legendary Let's Play with the newly-released The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
- The second part, Return to the Dreamy Let's Play, began on December 25, 2017, ending the project's nine-month hiatus, and concluded on February 14, 2020 after a total of 451 episodes. This part covers Kirby games released from 2001 to 2011, from Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land on the Game Boy Advance to Kirby Mass Attack on the Nintendo DS, along with Super Smash Bros. Melee, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and new releases Kirby Star Allies and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
- The third part, Revenge of the Dreamy Let's Play, began on March 9, 2020 with the first episode of Kirby's Return to Dream Land. This part covers Kirby games released from 2011 to 2022, from Return to Dream Land on the Wii to the new release Kirby and the Forgotten Land on the Nintendo Switch. It is currently ongoing.
- The fourth and final part, Nightmare in the Dreamy Let's Play, was announced with a trailer in the first episode of Kirby and the Forgotten Land on March 30, 2022, and debuted officially on April 1, 2022, running concurrently with the conclusion of Revenge of the Dreamy Let's Play. A crossover series with You Do It, Nightmare consists of livestreams by Rick returning to each game in the franchise in order to play through hard modes and complete additional objectives that were left out of the original LPs. It is currently ongoing.
