- This page is about the combined game using "lock-on technology". For the individual games when not locked-on, see Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic & Knuckles.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles is a 1994 platform game developed and published by Sega for the Sega Genesis. It is the third main game in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. Originally developed as Sonic the Hedgehog 3, it was unable to be finished on time in its complete form, and was split into two smaller games - Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic & Knuckles, both released during 1994. However, the developers included "lock-on technology" with Sonic & Knuckles, allowing the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 cartridge to be physically attached to the Sonic & Knuckles cartridge. This combined the two games and allowed Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles to be played as originally intended. The game was played by The D-Pad in 2011, as the fourth game in Sonic Week. The LP was recorded in two sessions, and released on The D-Pad's then-website, dpadup.com, as two long episodes (the first covering the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 half of the game, the second covering the Sonic & Knuckles half) on June 23 and June 24, 2011. Later, these videos were edited into 18 shorter episodes, and released on The D-Pad's YouTube channel between September 16 and October 12, 2011.
In 2016, the game was revisited on the channel, as the eighteenth game in The Super Sonic Let's Play, which by then had already covered both Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic & Knuckles separately. The LP consisted of 14 episodes; 13 covering the main single player game, and a bonus episode covering the two-player VS mode. It began on November 15, 2016, and concluded on November 30, 2016.

Trivia
- The Sonic Week LP of the game labels the two halves of the series as Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic & Knuckles, and numbers them as if they were two separate games. Despite this, the LP is of the combined version, and not the two individual games.
