Pokémon Sword is a 2019 role-playing game developed by Game Freak and published by The Pokémon Company and Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch. It is part of the eighth generation of the Pokémon franchise, and one half of a pair of games with Pokémon Shield. The two games are the first entries in the eighth generation, introducing 81 new Pokémon, the United Kingdom-inspired Galar region, and new game mechanics such as Dynamax, the Wild Area, and Raid Battles. For the first time in a main series game, not all Pokémon in the National Pokédex are present in the game's code, meaning players must use Pokémon Home to collect them all. Two expansions, The Isle of Armor and The Crown Tundra, were released as paid downloadable content in 2020 in lieu of the "third versions" released in previous generations. These expansions add a further 8 new Pokémon, bring back some of the missing Pokémon not present in the base game, and allow the player to explore the titular new areas.

Pokémon Sword was covered by The D-Pad before its release, in two episode of The D-Pad Reacts focusing on Nintendo Direct presentations for the game, released on February 27 and June 6, 2019. The game was then played in full by Ben and Geoff upon its release. The LP consisted of 133 episodes; 88 covering the main game, 21 covering the postgame, 20 covering The Isle of Armor, and 4 covering The Crown Tundra, released from November 18, 2019 to September 29, 2023. It is currently on indefinite hiatus.

• Pokémon Sword is the second main series Pokémon game to be played on the channel as a regular LP rather than a Padlocke as part of Pokémon Rivals, and the first time that the primary games in a generation have been played this way. This is due to both the large amount of series on The D-Pad's schedule at the time, and the fact that Rick felt the gameplay of the series was moving in a direction less suited to Nuzlocke challenges.
• Although Pokémon Shield was not played in full on the channel, Rick did carry out an offscreen LP alongside the Sword LP, recording occasional episodes whenever the content of the two games diverged significantly enough to warrant it.
