Metroid is a 1987 action-adventure game developed by Nintendo R&D1 and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Entertainment System. It is the first game in the Metroid franchise. The plot follows Samus Aran, a bounty hunter sent to the planet Zebes to battle Space Pirates, who are attempting to weaponize the titular organisms for their own gain. The player controls Samus through a maze-like series of caverns beneath the planet, with frequent backtracking required as they obtain new upgrades that allow access to new areas. Metroid is one of the thirty games included in the NES Classic Edition dedicated console. This version of the game was played on The D-Pad in a one-off episode in 2018, as the twenty-first game in their NES Classic Edition series. The episode was released on December 27, 2018.

The game was revisited on The D-Pad by Rick in 2021, as the first game in The Screwy Let's Play. Episodes were streamed live on the dpadfm Twitch account before being posted to YouTube. The LP consisted of 2 episodes, released from June 17 to June 30, 2021.

Trivia

  • The second and final episode of the 2021 Metroid LP was part of the same livestream as the first episode of Metroid II: Return of Samus, due to Rick finishing the former game less than an hour into the stream.
