Metroid is a 1987 action-adventure game developed by Nintendo R&D1 and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Entertainment System. It is the first game in the Metroid franchise. The plot follows Samus Aran, a bounty hunter sent to the planet Zebes to battle Space Pirates, who are attempting to weaponize the titular organisms for their own gain. The player controls Samus through a maze-like series of caverns beneath the planet, with frequent backtracking required as they obtain new upgrades that allow access to new areas.
