Sonic the Hedgehog CD is a 1993 platform game developed by Sonic Team and published by Sega for the Sega CD add-on for the Sega Genesis. It is a side game in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, developed by the remaining members of Sonic Team in Japan after some of the team (including lead programmer Yuji Naka) moved to the United States to create Sonic the Hedgehog 2. The game was played by The D-Pad in 2011, as the second game in Sonic Week. The LP was recorded in a single session, and released on The D-Pad's then-website, dpadup.com, as one long episode on June 21, 2011. Later, this video was edited into 7 shorter episodes, and uploaded to The D-Pad's YouTube channel between August 24 and September 1, 2011.
In 2016, the game was revisited on the channel, as the eighth game in The Super Sonic Sonic Let's Play, with Christian Whitehead's 2011 remaster of the game on the PS3 being played instead of the Sega CD original. This LP consisted of two complete runs of the game - one as Sonic and one as Tails. The LP consisted of 9 episodes; it began on August 15, 2016, and concluded on August 19, 2016.
