It is an 8-bit companion game to the 16-bit Sega Genesis title Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the second game in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, and a sequel to the 8-bit version of the original Sonic the Hedgehog. Though it shares a name with the Genesis game, it features a completely different plot and levels, and several new game mechanics. The player controls Sonic, as he attempts to recover the Chaos Emeralds and rescue his kidnapped friend Tails from Dr. Robotnik.
