A mid-1992 prototype build of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, a 1992 platform game developed by Sonic Team and published by Sega for the Sega Genesis, was leaked after being stolen from a toy fair and distributed illegally on unlicensed cartridges. The ROM later ended up on a Chinese website, where it was found and brought to the attention of the Western fanbase by Simon Wai in 1999. Due to this it is often referred to as the Simon Wai prototype. It shows Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in an earlier state, when it was going to have many more levels than were ultimately released. Incomplete versions of these levels are present in the beta, including the infamous Hidden Palace Zone, which would later be reimagined for Sonic & Knuckles. The game was played on The D-Pad in 2016, as the twentieth game in The Super Sonic Let's Play. The LP consisted of 4 episodes, released on weekdays from December 12 to December 15, 2016.
