Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is a 1992 platform game developed by Sega Technical Institute and published by Sega. It is the second main game in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, and the first entry in a three-part arc consisting of it, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and Sonic & Knuckles. The game was played by The D-Pad in 2011, as the third game in Sonic Week. The LP was recorded in a single session, and released on The D-Pad's then-website, dpadup.com, as one long episode on June 22, 2011. Later, this video was edited into 8 shorter episodes, and uploaded to The D-Pad's YouTube channel between September 5 and September 14, 2011.

In 2016, the game was revisited on the channel, as the sixth game in The Super Sonic Let's Play. The LP consisted of 9 episodes; 8 covering the main single player game, released between July 30 and August 5, 2016, and a bonus episode covering the two-player VS mode, released months later on December 9, 2016.

In 2018, in celebration of the 500th episode of The Super Sonic Let's Play, the game was played for a third time on the channel, as the third game in D-Pad Rivals. The game was played as a race between Rick and C/J, as a follow-up to their race of the original Sonic the Hedgehog from 2014. The race was released in 5 episodes from October 26, 2018 to October 30, 2018, with an extended bonus episode covering the race in its entirety released on October 31, 2018, and a further bonus episode comparing the race to Rick and C/J's original Sonic the Hedgehog race released on November 1, 2018.

In 2019, the game was played for a fourth time on the channel via the Sega Genesis Mini re-release of the game, as the twelfth game in the series of the same name. The LP consisted of a single episode; it was released on November 19, 2019.
