Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is a 1992 platform game developed by Sega Technical Institute and published by Sega for the Sega Genesis. It is the second main game in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. The player controls Sonic, now joined by his friend Tails, pursuing Dr. Robotnik on West Side Island as he attempts to take over the world using a space station called the Death Egg. Mechanically, the game expands significantly on its predecessor, with a new "spin dash" technique, the ability to transform into the powerful Super Sonic after collecting all seven Chaos Emeralds, and the option to play as either Sonic, Tails, or both. A second player may control Tails for co-op gameplay, and the game additionally includes a competitive multiplayer mode where two players can race through various levels. The game was played on The D-Pad in 2011, as the third game in Sonic Week. The entire LP was recorded in a single session and uploaded to the now defunct dpadup.com website as one long episode on June 22, 2011. It was later edited into 8 shorter episodes and released on YouTube on weekdays from September 5 to September 14, 2011.
The game was revisited on The D-Pad in 2016, as the sixth game in The Super Sonic Let's Play. The main LP consisted of 8 episodes, released on weekdays from July 30 to August 5, 2016. A bonus episode covering the game's competitive multiplayer mode was released on December 9, 2016.
The game was played on The D-Pad a third time in celebration of the 500th episode of The Super Sonic Let's Play in 2018, as a race between Rick and C/J, a follow-up to their race of the Sonic the Hedgehog in 2014, and the third game in D-Pad Rivals. In this LP, Rick played the 2018 Xbox One port of the game, and C/J played the PlayStation 4 port. The LP consisted of 5 episodes, released daily from October 26 to October 30, 2018. A bonus episode featuring the entirety of the race was released on October 31, 2018, and a further episode featuring a side-by-side comparison of the race with the Sonic the Hedgehog race was released on November 1, 2018.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is one of the forty-two games included in the Sega Genesis Mini dedicated console. This version of the game was played on The D-Pad in a one-off episode in 2019, as the twelfth game in their Sega Genesis Mini series. The episode was released on November 19, 2019.
The game was played on The D-Pad a fifth time in a one-off episode by Rick in celebration of the 10th anniversary of Sonic Week in 2021, as the third game in Sonic Weekathon. The episode was streamed live on the dpadfm Twitch account before being uploaded to YouTube on June 22, 2021.
