This page is about the 1991 Sega Genesis game. For the Master System and Game Gear version, see Sonic the Hedgehog (8-bit). For the 2006 game of the same name, see Sonic the Hedgehog (2006). For the 2020 film, see Sonic the Hedgehog (film).

Sonic the Hedgehog is a 1991 platform game developed by Sonic Team and published by Sega for the Sega Genesis. It is the first game in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. The player controls the titular character, an anthropomorphic blue hedgehog, through six "zones" of three "acts" each in his quest to defeat the evil scientist Dr. Robotnik, who has imprisoned the animals of South Island in robots in an attempt to gain the six powerful Chaos Emeralds. The game was played on The D-Pad in celebration of its 20th anniversary in 2011, as the first game in Sonic Week. The entire LP was recorded in a single session and uploaded to the now defunct dpadup.com website as one long episode on June 20, 2011. It was later edited into 6 shorter episodes and released on YouTube on weekdays from August 15 to August 22, 2011.

The game was revisited on The D-Pad in celebration of its 23rd anniversary in 2014, as a race between Rick and C/J and the first game in D-Pad Rivals. In this LP, Rick played the 2006 Wii port of the game, and C/J played the 2007 Xbox 360 port. The LP consisted of 6 episodes, released daily from June 23 to June 28, 2014. A bonus episode featuring the entirety of the race was released on June 29, 2014, and a further episode featuring a side-by-side comparison of the race with Rick and C/J's later Sonic the Hedgehog 2 race as part of The Super Sonic Let's Play was released on November 1, 2018.

The game was played on The D-Pad a third time in celebration of its 25th anniversary in 2016, as the second game (and first official game) in The Super Sonic Let's Play. This time, the original Genesis version was played once again. The LP consisted of 5 episodes, released on weekdays from June 20 to June 24, 2016.

Sonic the Hedgehog is one of the forty-two games included in the Sega Genesis Mini dedicated console. This version of the game was played on The D-Pad in a one-off episode in 2019, as the fifth game in their Sega Genesis Mini series. The episode was released on November 8, 2019.

Trivia

  • Sonic the Hedgehog is the first game ever played on The D-Pad. It is also one of only two games to be played in four entirely separate LPs on the channel, along with Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
  • The Sonic Week LP of Sonic the Hedgehog marks the first appearance of podcast hosts Rick and John on the YouTube channel, and the first appearance of C/J on The D-Pad in general.
  • The Sega Genesis Mini LP is the only one of the four LPs not to feature the original trio of Rick, John and C/J.
